Educational and Research Organisations

In addition to the private companies, also the educational and research companies of the Southern Savonia region have taken part to the cluster. Aalto University, Small Business Center
Aalto University’s Small Business Center forms up-to-date statistics and surveys about the entrepreneurship and SME’s for the purposes of the company leaders, decision makers and the education. In bio-energy sector, the special expertise of the Small Business Center are the new forms of the bio-energy business and entrepreneurship meaning the entrepreneur education, the development of the business, the internationalisation training and the research cooperation.

 

Esedu, South Savo Vocational College
Esedu offers vocational education and training for adolescents and adults. Esedu offers unique versatile learning paths and international learning experiences customized to fit different life situations. All education is given in Finnish.

 

University of Helsinki, Ruralia Institute
Ruralia Institute is an independently administrated multidisciplinary expert institute at the University of Helsinki. The mission of the institute is to improve the welfare of rural people and develop the sources of livelihood in the rural areas through research, development, education and training. The development activities of the Institute serve economic life, foster innovation activities and support regional development. Ruralia Institute constitutes of two units: Mikkeli and Seinäjoki.

 

Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT Savo Sustainable Technologies
LUT Savo Sustainable Technologies carries out research of material and energy technologies in the cities of Mikkeli and Varkaus in Eastern Finland. The research concentrates on sustainable technologies which consume less energy and fewer limited resources, use renewable resources, do not directly or indirectly pollute the environment, and can be reused or recycled. The objective is to strengthen the current level of sustainable technology know-how and the activity of companies in the field.

 

Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences
Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) offers the highest education based on the combination of theory and practise in cities of Mikkeli, Pieksämäki and Savonlinna. MUAS emphasise on scientific research and development and provides services related to educational function. Research and development is done also in material technology and environmental fields, and MUAS is one of the central operators of technological innovations, utilisation of forest biomass, and material and environmental technology in the region. MUAS educates engineers in natural resources and environmental fields.

 

The Finnish Forest Centre
Suomen metsäkeskus – The Finnish Forest Centre is a state-funded organisation covering the whole country. The Centre is tasked with promoting forestry and related livelihoods, advising landowners on how to care for and benefit from their forests and the ecosystems therein, collecting and sharing data related to Finland’s forests and enforcing forestry legislation. Metsään.fi-eServices offer the latest information directly to forest owners on their properties.

 

The Association of Forest Owners
The Association of Forest Owners (Metsänomistajien liitto Järvi-Suomi ry) is the trade and lobbying organisation of the forest owners. Its main objective is to enhance the private forest economy and promote the usage of wood. The Association is responsible for promoting of the interest of the private forest owners in the region, the maintenance of the forest property and the development and cooperation of the Forest Management Associations. The annual rates of the wood material sold by the private forest owners in the region represent approximately one third of the whole private forest markets in Finland.

 

The Forest Management Association
The Forest Management Association (Metsänhoitoyhdistys Järvi-Savo) is the association funded and managed by the forest owners. Its main purpose is to promote the profitability of the forest economy and the implementation of the other goals set for the forest economy. The Forest Management Association in Southern Savonia region is the leading lobbyer of the forest owners and the most remarkable service producer of wood market and forest management services.

 

MTT Agrifood Research Finland, Mikkeli
MTT Agrifood Research Finland is Finland’s leading research institute in the field of agricultural and food research and agricultural environmental research. MTT Mikkeli researches the organic production and sustainable production systems. The research team concentrates on the sustainable food systems, the recycling of the nutrients, organic plant production, bioenergy and the production of special plants and their commercialization and marketing.
